Disabled Citizens Alliance for Independence, a community based Center for Independent Living, has been serving the needs of people with disabilities since October 1, 1980. DCAI services insure that all individuals, regardless of disability, have equal access to society. Basically DCAI service area covers the five counties of Crawford, Iron, Reynolds, Dent and Washington. DCAI is a not-for-profit, tax exempt corporation (501C-3).
The DCAI Education Services provide Skills Training to assist and enhance people with living independently. Any person qualifies who has a disability and would like to further their education. We work with all ages and all disabilities.
The DCAI Educational Department provides one on one tutoring in the consumers home, at school or at the DCAI office. We work with consumers on the educational level that the consumer functions on and in the academic area that the consumer request. DCAI staff will also assist consumer in preparing to obtain their GED.
The DCAI Educational Department also advocates at Individual Education Plan Meetings for children with disabilities to help their parents and school to insure an appropriate education.
The DCAI Educational Department also provides an Ability Awareness Program to educate the community and further community awareness about people with disabilities. Program details include but are not limited to:
A. Explaining equipment used by people with disabilities. B. Disability etiquette. C. Hands on training with area schools and communities, such as role-playing etc. D. We also display visual and hearing and other assistive equipment.
The Educational Department wants to expand our educational library so we will have updated materials to better serve our consumers needs. Also, we our trying to improve our adult literacy program which would be open to the community. This program would assist anyone in the community who wanted to achieve their GED, or just to sharpen their academic skills to improve their quality of life.
